The Benefits of Composting: Turning Kitchen Scraps into Garden Gold

Composting is an excellent way to reduce household waste while enriching your garden soil. Organic matter like kitchen scraps, leaves, and grass clippings can be turned into nutrient-rich compost, sometimes called “black gold” because of its many benefits to soil health.

The process of composting is simple but requires balance. You’ll need a mix of “green” materials (like fruit peels, coffee grounds, and vegetable scraps) and “brown” materials (like leaves, straw, and newspaper). The green materials provide nitrogen, while the brown materials add carbon, both of which are essential for decomposition. A good ratio is 1 part green to 3 parts brown.

Keep your compost moist but not soaked, and turn it every few weeks to allow oxygen to help break down the materials. Over time, microorganisms and worms will turn the pile into rich, dark compost, which can then be added to your garden soil to improve structure, increase nutrient content, and boost water retention.
